Palaiomonastiro in Vrontamas

The monument of the Palaiomonastiro is located in the steep gorge of the river Evrotas. It is a cavernous church of the 12th century which was protected due to its defensive position from the external attacks. It was the shelter for the martyrdom residents of Vrontamas, who had been hiding there for many days when on the 15th September 1825, the troops of Ibrahim burnt them alive. This is the main historical and religious monument of the municipality of Evrotas and it has been officially characterised as a historic - preservable monument by the Ministry of Culture. The municipality of Evrotas has asked from the State to establish the 15th of September as a bank holiday.
